John L. Sullivan win the heavyweight boxing championship in Richburg, Mississippi.
July 8, 1889
Sullivan beats Jake Kilrain in 75-rounds to win the last undisputed heavyweight bare knuckles boxing championship. After the fight, a young Daniel Coakley, working as a reporter for the Boston Herald, “scoops” the competition by renting a burro and riding it through swamps to the nearest telegraph station to file the story of the Sullivan-Kilrain fight.
